A recent survey of Belgravia Neighbourhood Forum members – with more than a third responding – offers a revealing and reassuring glimpse into how residents feel about the neighbourhood we all share.
Unsurprisingly, one word comes up again and again: community. Despite being in the very heart of London, Belgravia is still seen very much as a village. Respondents spoke warmly of the “sense of community”, the “village feel”, and the pleasure of “knowing neighbours”. Residents don’t only value the location, but the way of life here.
Closely linked is the area’s calm atmosphere. Residents repeatedly described Belgravia as “quiet”, “peaceful” and “a haven from the bustle around it”. In a city that rarely stops, that tranquillity is a valuable asset.
The beauty of Belgravia’s built environment features strongly. From white stucco mansions to elegant terraces to leafy squares, respondents highlighted the “beautiful architecture” and “attractive streets” that define the area. Add its central location – with parks, shops and transport all close by – and it’s easy to see why so many feel fortunate to live or work here.
There is also support for strengthening our local retail centres with residents keen to see “independent shops and businesses thrive”.
That said, the survey did highlight some concerns. Crime and antisocial behaviour were mentioned frequently and seen to be on the increase, with references to car vandalism, bike theft and a perceived “lack of visible policing”. Traffic, particularly dumped e-bikes and congestion, also featured as negatives. Development and construction disruption were another recurring theme. While building work is inevitable, there is a clear desire to ensure it is carefully managed.
So where does the Belgravia Neighbourhood Forum fit in? Encouragingly, many feel it is already focused on the right things. Several simply said: “keep doing what you are doing.” Others emphasised the importance of the Forum’s planning role; as one respondent put it, the priority is to “protect what makes Belgravia special”.
Taken together, the message is clear. Belgravia is valued not just for its beauty or location, but for its feel: its calm streets, human scale and sense of belonging. Residents care greatly about protecting these qualities.
